UN's International Day of Peace

UN's International Day of Peace

Qatar’s Approach to Peacebuilding on the UN International Day of Peace

Established in 1981 by the UN General Assembly, the International Day of Peace is observed annually on 21 September to strengthen the ideals of peace and shared humanity.

On this year’s International Day of Peace, the State of Qatar reaffirms its commitment to promoting international peace and stability through dialogue and diplomacy.

Qatar continues to play an important role in building a peaceful world through humanitarianism, multilateralism, and mediation, even in times of crisis and in the face of unlawful attacks on its own sovereignty.

As His Excellency the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, said in a recent address: “We in the State of Qatar affirm that the pursuit of peaceful settlement of disputes is not merely a legal obligation stipulated in the State’s Permanent Constitution, but also a humanitarian and moral commitment and a deeply rooted principle in our policy.”

Qatar’s Strong Support for the UN Mechanisms for Peace

The State of Qatar, an active and engaged member of the United Nations for over 50 years, supports the UN’s mission to foster peaceful resolutions to conflict and protect human rights.

Qatar’s institutional and multifaceted collaboration with the United Nations includes strong support for various UN agencies and their peacebuilding missions. The country hosts organisations including the UN International Labour Organization (ILO), World Health Organization (WHO), UN International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), all under one roof in the United Nations House.

Since 2023, the UN House in Qatar has served as a unique model of the Qatar-UN strategic partnership, functioning as a hub for regional cooperation across development, education, and humanitarian projects.

The Pathway to Peace

Qatar has developed a global reputation as a peace broker, deploying mediation and diplomacy as key pillars of foreign policy to build pathways to peace for conflicting countries across the world.

To highlight the State of Qatar’s longstanding efforts, the International Media Office (IMO) launched the “Pathway to Peace “exhibition in 2024 for visitors to explore the impact of Qatar’s role as a trusted, international partner for peace.

This permanent exhibition, located in the Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel, is free for all visitors who pre-register online at: https://imo.gov.qa/pathway-to-peace-exhibition
