LDC5: From Potential to Prosperity

The State of Qatar was honoured to welcome its international partners to Doha for the Fifth United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries (LDC5) from 5 to 9 March.

Under the theme “From Potential to Prosperity,” the fifth edition of the UN Conference brought together 5,000 participants, including world leaders, government representatives, policymakers and international development and economic specialists, all united by a common desire to accelerate practical and sustainable solutions to some of the most pressing challenges faced by least developed countries (LDCs) today.

As President of LDC5, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, inaugurated the Conference highlighting the need for global development partners to “follow the example of Qatar and take the initiative to support the implementation of […] our humanitarian and development duty towards the peoples of the least developed countries”.

His Highness reiterated Qatar’s commitment to promoting and enhancing multilateral efforts, emphasising the need for swift and timely delivery of humanitarian aid to all brotherly countries recently affected by humanitarian disasters and crises.

Qatar took the opportunity presented by the Conference to build on the commitments made during the Istanbul Programme of Action at LDC4 in Turkey, and renew its considerable financial pledges as part of the Doha Programme of Action.

During the Conference, the international community also convened to inaugurate the United Nations House, reflecting Qatar’s commitment to the United Nations and international peace and security.

At a time when the world continues to face severe challenges, Qatar further consolidates its expertise in supporting global poverty alleviation. With the provision of a $60 million financial contribution as part of the adopted Doha Political Declaration, the State of Qatar reaffirms its commitment to the Doha Programme of Action, driven by the ambition to amplify the resilience of developing nations globally.

Guided by a set of principles aimed at strengthening international cooperation, the State of Qatar will continue to play a pivotal role in encouraging every effort to bring countries together and drive forward global solidarity and unity.
